Through the past few years we have come to the conclusion that the majority of dog owners are in the dark about how harmful dog poop truly is. We have made it our DOOTY to inform the public about the facts and help to slowly but surely make Fort Wayne a safer and cleaner place to live. The amount of poop that is left on people’s lawns, public parks, apartment complexes, and public walkways is out of control. Hopefully this list will touch someone and make it a priority in their life. This is something we can change.
1. 40% of dog owners do not clean up their dog’s poop. (That’s 28,800,000 dogs in the USA)
2. Dog poop DOES NOT make a good fertilizer.
3. Dog feces are listed under the same category as OIL & TOXIC CHEMICAL SPILLS by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
4. Children and pets are the most susceptible to contracting the most common diseases and parasites found in dog feces.
5. Whipworms, Hookworms, Tapeworms, Parvovirus, Corona, Giardiasis, Salmonellosis,Cryptosporidiosis and Campylobacteriosis are the most common diseases and parasites carried in dog feces.
6. A single gram of dog feces can contain 23 million fecal coliform bacteria.
7. Dog poop takes over a year to break down, even after this time the bacteria continuously seeps into the soil of your property.
8. The Nitrogen released from dog poop is what kills and yellows the grass in your lawn, creating an ugly, patchy appearance. The longer dog poop is allowed to remain on your lawn, the more damage is done to it.
9. Most dog poop that is not picked up ends up in local waterways as runoff. It has been established as the 3rd largest contributor to water pollution.
